Google pulls AI feature from Google Earth over fake image concerns

According to a report by Sözcü, tech giant Google, a subsidiary of Alphabet, has decided to withdraw a new AI-powered image generation tool it developed for Google Earth shortly after its release. The feature, which was launched on Thursday, allowed users to generate photorealistic aerial images by entering written prompts.

However, the fact that some users produced and shared altered, fake satellite images through the system led to serious concerns that these visuals could be mistaken for real ones. In a statement on its official X (formerly Twitter) account, Google announced that the feature has been temporarily suspended to be equipped with stronger security measures.

The company emphasized that users place a special trust in the Google Earth platform because it provides a reliable perspective of the world. While it was noted that the feature was used for beneficial purposes by geographic information experts, the spread of screenshots that violated company policies was a factor in this decision. It was also emphasized that these AI-generated images were not published on the main Google Earth platform.

WARNING FROM EXPERTS

Dutch intelligence researcher Henk van Ess highlighted in a blog post how such tools could be exploited by malicious actors. Van Ess warned that increasingly realistic AI-generated landscapes would make the work of journalists, researchers, and verification experts more difficult, noting that the line between real and fake is becoming increasingly blurred.

Google, which has invested billions of dollars in AI technologies in recent years, continues to integrate these innovations into many of its products such as Search, Workspace, and Maps.
