Abdul El-Sayed, who won the Senate race in the state of Michigan during the US midterm elections, has gone down in history as the first Muslim politician elected to the US Senate.
Of Egyptian descent, El-Sayed stated in a post on his social media account following his election victory that it is a "great honor and privilege" for him to go to the Senate to serve Michigan.
According to unofficial results from the Associated Press, El-Sayed received 52 percent of the vote. His Republican opponent, Mike Rogers, remained at 46 percent statewide.
Following the official certification of the results, El-Sayed is expected to take the oath of office and begin his duties in Congress on January 3, 2027.
