Alleged election interference: New indictment for Donald Trump

A revised federal indictment has been prepared against former US President Donald Trump over allegations of attempting to alter the 2020 presidential election results in his favor.

The revised indictment, prepared by Special Counsel Jack Smith, includes the four charges previously brought against Trump. However, parts that the Supreme Court could consider as "official acts of the president" have been removed from the indictment, narrowing the charges accordingly.

The new indictment highlights Trump's actions as a political candidate rather than as a sitting president.

This change comes after the Supreme Court ruled last month that Trump has partial immunity for his official acts, but does not have immunity for steps taken as a candidate.

While Special Counsel Smith is prosecuting Trump for criminal interference in the 2020 presidential election, Trump's legal team had argued for presidential immunity to have the election interference case dismissed.

The US Supreme Court ruled on July 1 that the former President has partial immunity from prosecution for his official acts, but ruled that this immunity does not apply to private conduct.
