US presidential race candidates Kamala Harris and Donald Trump are at odds ahead of the debate scheduled for September 10 over whether microphones should be muted when it is not the turn of the candidate speaking.

Both candidates are under pressure to deliver a strong performance in the live televised debate, which is of critical importance for the election. President Joe Biden's poor performance in the program he attended with Trump led to his withdrawal from the candidacy.

The current dispute concerns muting the microphone of a candidate when they are not speaking on stage. This was a condition that both Biden and Trump accepted for the debate program organized by CNN in June.

According to the report by VOA Turkish, Biden's campaign team had set the muting of the microphone of the candidate who does not have the floor as a condition for the decision to accept this year's debate programs.

Some campaign officials, who say that voters would not be able to hear Trump's outbursts and interruptions during the debate, now regret this decision.

HE CANNOT ACT LIKE A PRESIDENT

The Harris campaign now wants the microphones to be open at all times. Harris spokesperson Brian Fallon said, “The Trump camp prefers muted microphones because they don’t think their candidate can act presidential for 90 minutes on his own.” Fallon also added that Harris is “ready to deal with Trump’s constant lies and interruptions, and that Trump should stop hiding behind the mute button.”

Trump spokesperson Jason Miller, on the other hand, said that the Republican candidate had accepted the debate program on ABC television “under the same conditions as the program on CNN.”

MICROPHONES WERE NOT MUTED IN PREVIOUS PROGRAMS

In most of the past debate programs, the microphones of both candidates were not muted.

The Commission on Presidential Debates had announced that microphones would be muted when candidates were not given the floor in the October 2020 program, following the first Biden-Trump encounter that turned into a verbal sparring match.
