EU imposes sanctions on Iranian Interior Minister Momeni and 14 other officials

The EU Council has decided to impose sanctions on several Iranian officials. In a written statement released by the Council, it was stated, "The Council has decided to implement restrictive measures against Iran due to serious human rights violations committed in the country and the military support provided to Russia in its ongoing war against Ukraine."

Interior Minister Momeni and judiciary members targeted by sanctions

The statement noted that 15 individuals and 6 entities have been added to the sanctions list, alleging that these persons and organizations are responsible for the violent suppression of peaceful protests in the country, as well as the use of violence, unlawful detention, and intimidation methods by security forces against demonstrators. In this context, it was stated that the names added to the EU's sanctions list include Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni, as well as members of the Iranian judiciary, Prosecutor General Mohammad Movahedi Azad and presiding judge Iman Afshari. It was also reported that high-level officials from security force elements, including the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the police, are among those sanctioned.

Sanctioned entities

Among the institutions and organizations targeted by the sanctions are the Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting (IRIB) regulatory body SATRA, the Seraj Cyberspace Organization, the Working Group for Determining Instances of Criminal Content (WGDICC), and various software companies. The statement noted, "These entities have contributed to censorship activities, troll campaigns on social media, the spread of misinformation in online environments, or the widespread disruption of internet access by developing tools for surveillance and repression."

In addition, it was stated that the number of entities included in the sanctions list under restrictive measures related to human rights violations in Iran has risen to 247 individuals and 50 organizations. In accordance with these measures, the assets of the listed individuals and entities will be frozen, and they will be prohibited from traveling to the EU or receiving funds or economic resources. Furthermore, it was underscored that "the export of equipment that could be used for internal repression against the public, including telecommunications monitoring equipment, to Iran is prohibited."
