F-16 fighter jet crashes during training flight in Singapore

An F-16 fighter jet that took off from Tengah Air Base in Singapore for a training flight crashed shortly after takeoff. The pilot survived the accident by ejecting from the aircraft.

In a statement following the accident, the Singapore Ministry of Defence announced that training for the F-16 fleet has been temporarily suspended.

The Ministry of Defence stated that the suspension is a safety precaution and will remain in effect until investigations show that it is safe to resume training, noting that the pilot of the crashed aircraft had over 2,000 hours of flight time in F-16 aircraft and that detailed investigations are ongoing.

Singapore has been using US-made F-16s for approximately 30 years, and one of the fighter jets last crashed in May 2004. The 25-year-old pilot of that aircraft, which crashed during a night training mission in the US state of Arizona, lost his life.
