While the start and end times for voting in the US midterm elections vary by state, Indiana and Kentucky were the first two states in the country where polls closed and counting began.
As voting continues in other states across the country, polls will continue to close one after another in the coming hours, starting with the eastern states.
Due to time zone differences, the final polls are expected to close in Alaska at 01:00 local time (09:00 TSI).
US midterm elections
The American public is at the polls to vote for gubernatorial and other local positions in their respective states, as well as for all 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 of the 100 seats in the Senate.
In the US election system, all 435 members of the House of Representatives go to the polls every two years, once during the general election when the US president is elected, and once during the midterm election.
In the 100-member Senate, one-third of the senators, who are elected for six-year terms, are renewed every two years through elections.
Current situation in Congress
Currently in the US, Republicans hold 53 seats in the Senate, while Democrats hold 45. The two independents, who hold two seats, often vote with the Democrats on many issues.
In the House of Representatives, Republicans hold 218 seats, Democrats hold 214, and independents hold 1 seat, while 2 seats remain vacant.
In his first assessment, Trump stated, "It looks like we are getting everything we wanted."
