Floods in Indonesia: Deaths and injuries reported

Heavy rainfall in Indonesia’s West Sumatra region has caused flooding, while a cold lava flow from a volcano has also occurred, resulting in the deaths of at least 34 people, officials announced. 

West Sumatra Disaster Agency spokesperson Ilham Wahab stated, “34 people have lost their lives, with 16 in Agam and 18 in Tanah Datar. We are searching for 16 missing people” he said. 

REPORTS OF MISSING PERSONS CONTINUE TO ARRIVE

Stating that police, soldiers, volunteers, and local residents are participating in the search and rescue operations launched in the region, Wahab reported that notifications of missing persons continue to arrive. Expressing that search and rescue efforts are ongoing, Wahab did not provide any figures regarding those who have been evacuated. 

In the Tanah Datar region of West Sumatra, damage occurred in some mosques and public pools due to falling rocks, while a road collapse was observed in the area where the Lembah Anai Waterfall is located. In Agam, numerous houses and facilities were damaged. 

At least 26 people had lost their lives in landslides and floods that affected West Sumatra in March.
