Gunfire in Damascus city center: Assassination allegations
An armed attack in Umayyad Square in the Syrian capital, Damascus, has raised allegations of an assassination attempt against a high-ranking security official. While authorities have interpreted the incident in different ways, security measures have been increased in the city.
Damascus' central Umayyad Square witnessed tense moments on Saturday following gunfire opened by unidentified individuals. According to information provided by security officials, it was alleged that Brigadier General Abdurrahman al-Dabbagh, who is responsible for public order in Damascus, was the target of an assassination attempt. Following the incident, security forces in Damascus announced that they were tracking the vehicle used in the attack and those inside it.
However, officials speaking through the official state news agency denied the claim that the attack targeted al-Dabbagh. At the same time, they stated that the security level in the region has been increased and the investigation is ongoing.
The incident found wide resonance on social media. Some users shared claims that Brigadier General al-Dabbagh was targeted around the Four Seasons Hotel last Friday evening. It was emphasized that the gunfire heard in the region was linked to this assassination attempt.
It was also stated that similar gunfire was heard in the Maliki neighborhood of Damascus and that these incidents were related to large-scale operations carried out to capture the suspects. Information obtained from eyewitnesses confirmed that extraordinary measures have been taken in the city center.
Security sources stated that the investigation into the incident is continuing and the identities of the attackers are being investigated.
Born in the town of Jdeideh al-Fadl in the Damascus countryside, Brigadier General Abdurrahman al-Dabbagh is one of the prominent figures in Syria's security structure. He holds a high-level position responsible for maintaining public order, particularly in the capital Damascus, and is involved in the planning of security operations.
In recent years, al-Dabbagh has become a security official whose name is mentioned more frequently in the public eye. Also known by the titles of "inspector" or "mukaddam" in the Syrian army, al-Dabbagh has long held the duty of coordinating security forces.
