Iraq makes decision on Iran border following Saudi Arabia attacks

It has been reported that the Iraqi government has ordered the closure of the Shalamcheh border crossing with Iran following recent drone attacks against Saudi Arabia.

According to a report by Reuters citing security sources, the decision was made after the East-West Crude Oil Pipeline in Saudi Arabia was targeted by drones that were reportedly launched from Iraq. Sources stated that a large-scale operation has been launched to identify the perpetrators of the attacks.

The Saudi Arabian Ministry of Foreign Affairs had announced that it was determined that the drones used in the attack on the oil pipeline were launched from Iraq. The Riyadh administration stated that there would be no retaliation for the attacks for the time being; this decision was made to give Iraqi authorities the opportunity to take the necessary steps to prevent attacks from their territory against Saudi Arabia and neighboring countries.

While no detailed information was shared regarding those responsible for the attack, the Iraqi government also condemned the attacks on Saudi Arabia. In a statement from the Iraqi Prime Minister's Office, it was stated, "The Iraqi government reiterates once again that its territory and airspace will not be a base for attacks against any country."

It was also reported that a commander serving in Iraq's Maysan province was dismissed as part of the investigation. The decision to close the Shalamcheh border crossing indicates that the Baghdad administration has increased security measures following the attacks.
