Joe Biden's first statement after decision to withdraw from race: Why did he recommend Harris?

US President Joe Biden appeared before cameras at the White House for the first time on Sunday, July 21, regarding his withdrawal from the presidential race to be held on November 5, and explained the reasons behind his decision.

Emphasizing that he loves his country and serving it, and that he is very proud of his presidency, Biden stated that they are in a period where democracy must be defended and that his decision should be evaluated in this context.

Implying that the decision to withdraw from the race was made to win the election against Republican candidate Donald Trump, Biden used the following expressions:

"I believe my record as president, my leadership in the world, my vision for America's future, and my performance would have been enough for a second term. But nothing can come in the way of saving our democracy, not even personal ambition. So, I have decided that the best way forward is to pass the torch to a new generation. This is the best way to unite our nation."

Explaining why he recommended Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him, Biden said, "I have made my decision and I have shared it. I want to thank our great Vice President Kamala Harris. She is experienced, she is tough, she is capable. She has been an incredible partner to me and a leader for our country. Now the choice is up to you. The American people, make that choice."

"I WILL FOCUS ON MY DUTIES FOR THE REMAINING 6 MONTHS"

Explaining that he will spend the remaining time of his presidency focusing on important domestic and foreign policy issues, Biden said, "I will focus on doing my job as president for the remaining 6 months."

Stating that he will continue his efforts to reduce costs for low-income families, grow the economy, and work in areas such as democracy and human rights, Biden added that there is no place for political violence in the US.

Emphasizing that he will continue his work on international issues, especially Ukraine and Gaza, Biden assessed, "I will continue to work to end the war in Gaza, bring all the hostages home, and ensure peace and security in the Middle East."

Biden emphasized that they will continue to support Kyiv in the Ukraine war and that they will remain strong and resilient against Russia by keeping the NATO alliance stronger than ever.

US President Biden announced in a statement on his X account on Sunday, July 21, that he was withdrawing from the presidential race and recommended Vice President Kamala Harris to replace him.

Harris, who quickly gathered the support of more than half of the Democratic delegates, thus reached the number of delegates required for the party's presidential nomination.

The Democratic Party's presidential candidate will be officially determined at the party convention to be held in Chicago between August 19-22.
