Mexican mayoral candidate Gaytan killed in assassination
Gisela Gaytan, a mayoral candidate in the city of Celaya in Mexico's Guanajuato state, has lost her life following an assassination attempt.
According to reports in local media, Gaytan, the mayoral candidate for the city of Celaya, was subjected to an armed attack during her election campaign.
In the attack, Gisela Gaytan lost her life, while 3 people were injured.
Authorities described the death of Gaytan, who was the candidate for the ruling National Regeneration Movement (MORENA), as an assassination.
Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador condemned the attack on Gaytan in a statement.
Obrador stated that such attacks are deeply saddening and that these politicians were fighting to defend democracy.

Gaytan's death has once again brought the increasing acts of violence against politicians in Mexico to the agenda ahead of the general elections to be held on June 2.

Guanajuato, where 401 murders were committed in the first quarter of 2024, has become the state with the highest number of violent incidents in Mexico.

More than 100 million voters in Mexico will cast their ballots in the June 2 elections to determine the country's new president and members of parliament.
