New 3.3 billion euro support from the EU to Ukraine: Total resources for the year reach 15 billion euros

The European Union is adding a new item to its military and financial support for Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced that an additional 3.3 billion euros in funding will be transferred to Kyiv following a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Von der Leyen stated that the funds in question will be used for the procurement of missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles. According to the statement, the new payment will bring the total resources mobilized by the EU for Ukraine this year to approximately 15 billion euros.

Stating that Russia continues its attacks on Kyiv, von der Leyen expressed that Europe's support for Ukraine will continue. The Commission President also recalled that EU funding for Patriot systems was approved last week under the "Ukraine Support Loan".

Von der Leyen reported that the remaining funds under SAFE are ready to be used for a new program aimed at joint EU-Ukraine defense projects. In this context, she said that the development of a European air and missile defense system together with Ukraine is targeted.

Stating that the joint anti-ballistic Freya system will serve as the foundation, von der Leyen noted that they want to combine Ukraine's battlefield experience and innovative capacity with Europe's technological and industrial power.

Emphasizing that EU support is not limited to the defense sector, von der Leyen remarked, "We have already mobilized approximately 15 billion euros for Ukraine this year. More will come."

Stating that in her meeting with Zelenskyy, they discussed steps to pave the way for additional financing as well as reforms that need to be carried out in parliament for Ukraine's progress in the EU membership process, von der Leyen noted that she will attend the UN General Assembly in New York next week.

Von der Leyen summarized the message she will deliver at the meetings with the words, "Europe is increasing its support. Now others must increase their support as well."
