At the EU Leaders' Summit held in Brussels, Belgium, with the participation of heads of state or government from member countries, the individuals who will lead the EU for the next 5 years were determined following the European Parliament elections held on June 6-9.
In a statement on his social media account, European Council President Charles Michel announced that it was proposed for Ursula von der Leyen to continue as President of the European Commission for another 5 years.
Michel stated that former Portuguese Prime Minister Antonio Costa was elected as the President of the European Council and that Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas was proposed as the High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
With the exception of Costa, the other nominees will need to receive a vote of confidence from the European Parliament General Assembly on July 16 to assume their duties.
