No new federal funding for Harvard University!
The U.S. Department of Education has announced that no new federal funding will be provided to Harvard University until it meets the demands of the White House.
U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon sent a letter to the President of Harvard University. In the letter, McMahon alleged that Harvard has made a mockery of the country's higher education system by enrolling foreign students who display contemptuous attitudes toward the U.S.
Stating that the administration of President Donald Trump is willing to continue providing federal funding to Harvard as long as it commits to complying with federal laws, McMahon said, "Harvard has failed in every way to meet its legal obligations, its duties of ethics and trust, its responsibilities of transparency, and any standard of academic rigor."
Secretary McMahon stated, "A university at its best should fulfill our nation's highest ideals and enlighten the thousands of hopeful students who walk through its magnificent gates. However, Harvard has betrayed this ideal."
Ministry officials emphasized in a press conference regarding the matter that Harvard will not be able to benefit from new federal research funding until it proves that it has "demonstrated responsibility in university governance."
Officials stated that the decision only covers research grants and that student financial aid will not be affected.
WHAT HAD HAPPENED?
The federal government had threatened to freeze federal funding for many universities, including Harvard, citing campus protests in support of Palestine as well as diversity, equity, and inclusion programs.
In line with this, the administration had decided to freeze the 2.2 billion dollars in funding and the 60 million dollar contract value provided to Harvard. The university, arguing that the federal government's freezing of funds was unlawful, had filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration to block this decision.
