Pot full of gold coins discovered during excavation

A remarkable discovery was made during sewage work carried out in the village of Inchal in the Belagavi district of India's Karnataka state. Workers conducting the excavation found 14 gold coins inside an old pot buried underground.

It was stated that the find emerged during infrastructure work being carried out near the BCM student hostel in the village. The workers who noticed the coins reported the situation to local authorities. The coins, which were recorded, were later handed over to government officials.

PERIOD OF THE COINS UNDER INVESTIGATION

Initial examinations determined that the total weight of the 14 gold coins was 54.8 grams. The gold value of the coins alone was calculated at approximately 1 million rupees. However, according to experts, the true significance of the find lies in its historical and archaeological nature rather than its monetary value.

It was reported that the coins have similar designs, with an elephant figure on one side and a motif from ancient times on the other. It is believed that these figures could provide important clues in determining which period the coins belong to.

According to initial estimates, the coins may date back to a period between the 10th and 15th centuries. While the possibility of the Talakad Ganga Dynasty period is being focused on, the connection of the find to the Vijayanagara period will also be investigated.

It was reported that the coins were delivered to the authorities to be placed in the state treasury. Following the expert examination, it will become clear when the gold was minted and why it was buried in the ground inside a pot.
