Trump signals sanctions for Russia and Ukraine

U.S. President Donald Trump hosted German Chancellor Friedrich Merz at the White House. In his statement, Trump noted that he had a two-hour phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin, remarking, "The Ukraine war is like two children fighting in a park. Sometimes you have to let them fight for a while."

Stating that the war in question could not end immediately, Trump said, "If I were president, this war would never have started. The number of people dying right now is much higher than reported."

SIGNAL FOR SANCTIONS

Responding to a question about whether new sanctions would be imposed on Russia, Trump said, "When I realize it won't stop, we will be very tough. It could be for both countries. It takes two to tango. I have a deadline in mind." Trump indicated that he would manage this process according to his own timeline, implying that if the war continues, he could take tougher measures against both Russia and Ukraine.

TRUMP'S REPROACH TO MUSK

Responding to Elon Musk's criticisms of the tax cut legislation, Trump stated that he has "always liked" Musk but is "disappointed" by his recent criticisms. Explaining that the removal of the electric vehicle mandate bothered Musk, Trump said, "Musk knew this bill better than anyone, but he caused problems later on."

Trump stated that he did not find the name Musk proposed for NASA management suitable, saying, "I helped him a lot, but what he expected from me was not appropriate."

"HE WAS RIGHT ABOUT EVERYTHING"

Stating that Musk began "acting differently" after leaving the Oval Office, Trump remarked, "He had a great farewell party, everyone came, and he was wearing a hat that said 'Trump was right about everything'." However, noting that this support weakened over time, Trump suggested that the change in Musk's attitude could be explained by "Trump Derangement Syndrome." "He wasn't the first person to leave me," Trump said, alleging that some individuals developed an "anti-administration" stance after leaving their posts.

Stating that the bill in question is the largest tax cut in U.S. history, Trump said, "It is sad that major entrepreneurs like Musk are criticizing this opportunity instead of supporting it."

While Trump said there would be "a good deal" regarding trade with the European Union, he noted that Germany plays an important role in this process. Trump also stated that the planned 50 percent customs duties are still on the table, adding, "Tariffs are not a problem, or we will make a deal."

"WE WILL END THE WAR"

Emphasizing that ending the Ukraine-Russia war is his "top priority," Trump said, "We will stop it."

U.S.-CHINA TALKS

Recalling that he was invited to China by President Xi Jinping following a phone call this morning, Trump stated that he and the First Lady have accepted the invitation and will travel to China, and that he has also invited Xi to the White House. Describing the call as "a very good conversation," Trump noted that they "clarified complex issues." Touching upon trade relations between the two countries, Trump said a U.S. delegation would soon hold talks with high-level Chinese officials, noting that a trade deal with China had been reached but they were "trying to clarify some points."

Trump also addressed the issue of Chinese students, stating that they could come to the U.S. and study without any problems. "It is an honor for us to host them," Trump said, but added that the incoming students must undergo a certain level of vetting.

"WE MUST END THIS TERRIBLE WAR"

German Chancellor Merz addressed the Ukraine-Russia war, stating, "It is our collective responsibility to stop this war. The U.S. is a key actor in this regard."

While noting that Germany will continue its support for Ukraine, Merz described the images coming from the battlefield as horrific. Merz added, "Ukraine is only striking military targets. Russia, on the other hand, is targeting energy infrastructure and civilians. That is the difference."
