U.S. President Donald Trump, in a broadcast where he made assessments regarding the Congressional midterm elections, said that he could send National Guard troops to cities governed by Democrats "if necessary."
Speaking on the Dan Bongino Show, which he joined by phone, Trump was asked whether he would send the National Guard to places described as "liberal cities" even if the mayors did not want to work with him. Trump responded to this question by saying, "There will be a point where I will do it if necessary."
Trump noted that such a step requires a call at the local or state level, stating, "You have to be called by the governor or the mayors." Recalling previous examples in Memphis and New Orleans, Trump stated that he took action in those cities "after the governor called."
The program's host suggested that Democrats and their "defund the police" policies could increase security problems in some cities. Trump's remarks come at a time when debates over security, crime fighting, and the division of authority between local and federal governments have returned to the agenda during the U.S. midterm election process.
The Trump administration had deployed troops and federal agents to cities such as Memphis and New Orleans in 2025, citing the fight against crime and the immigration crisis.
