Turkey has officially nominated Ambassador Feridun Sinirlioğlu, a former Minister of Foreign Affairs who currently serves as the Secretary General of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), for the position of United Nations (UN) Secretary-General.
Turkey's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador Ahmet Yıldız, announced that the letter regarding the candidacy application has been submitted to the Office of the President of the UN General Assembly. Yıldız stated that the application letter also includes Sinirlioğlu's curriculum vitae and his vision document.
Yıldız expressed that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan deemed it appropriate to nominate Sinirlioğlu, taking into account his "necessary qualifications, capabilities, experience in the international arena, and the trust placed in him for the UN Secretary-General position."
Stating that there has been no consensus candidate in the race for UN Secretary-General so far, Yıldız conveyed that this is why Turkey has nominated Sinirlioğlu. Yıldız also emphasized that they respect the tradition of the candidate emerging from the Latin American and Caribbean region, which is why they had waited until now.
Senior diplomat Sinirlioğlu served as Minister of Foreign Affairs during the August-November 2015 period. Having served as Turkey's Permanent Representative to the UN between 2016 and 2023, Sinirlioğlu currently continues his duties as the OSCE Secretary General.
