UK and US begin striking Houthi targets in Yemen

According to information received from local sources in Yemen, US and British warplanes carried out airstrikes on several locations in the Yemeni cities of Sanaa, Hodeidah, and Taiz during the night.

While no detailed information regarding the attacks has been shared, footage of the airstrikes has been posted on social media accounts.

As reported by the BBC, American officials announced that US and British forces in the region have struck Houthi targets in Yemen. Recently, following actions by the Houthis in Yemen against commercial vessels in response to Israel's attacks on Gaza, numerous shipping companies had decided to suspend their voyages in the Red Sea.

Reports of explosions are coming from Yemen's capital, Sanaa, and the port city of Hodeidah, but no statement has been issued by officials regarding the targets hit.

While the Houthi attacks endanger passage through the Suez Canal—which connects the Mediterranean to the Red Sea, offers the shortest route between Europe and Asia, and accounts for approximately 12 percent of global trade—the attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea and the successive decisions by companies have raised concerns that a new "supply chain crisis" could begin in the global economy.

The United Nations Security Council, in a resolution adopted on Wednesday, called for an immediate end to Houthi attacks and granted countries the right to defend their ships against attacks. This meant giving a green light to the US-led multinational naval task force in the region to repel attacks targeting commercial vessels in the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden.
