US response to Israel on 'Gaza resolution' serves as a warning: 'It must be implemented'

US Department of State Spokesperson Matthew Miller evaluated the latest situation in Gaza and the agenda regarding the Gaza resolution adopted at the UNSC during his daily press briefing.

Miller stated that the US administration did not veto the resolution, which calls for a ceasefire, the release of hostages, and humanitarian aid to Gaza, because they support these objectives.

'RESOLUTION DOES NOT IMPOSE NEW OBLIGATIONS ON ISRAEL' DEFENSE

Arguing that the resolution does not impose any additional obligations on Israel, Miller responded to a question about why this resolution differs from other UNSC resolutions that mandate obligations and sanctions by citing "relevant legal technique."

Miller said, "For example, some UN resolutions impose mandatory sanctions and actual obligations on the parties concerned. However, we believe that this resolution does not contain the relevant provisions regarding binding force and obligations."

Expressing that the UNSC resolution is still important and valuable, Miller stated, "The resolution carries weight. As is always the case with UNSC resolutions, we believe it should be respected and implemented."

REFUTED NETANYAHU

On the other hand, Miller refuted the statement made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office that "Hamas has withdrawn from hostage deal negotiations following the Gaza resolution adopted at the UNSC."

Miller used the expression, "The claim that Hamas rejected the latest hostage deal proposal and withdrew from talks because of the UNSC resolution is not accurate in any respect and is unfair to the hostages and their families."

Stating, "We believe that a comprehensive military operation into Rafah would not only harm Palestinian civilians and disrupt the flow of humanitarian aid, but would also harm Israel's own national security and further isolate Israel in the world," Miller said that there are approximately 1.5 million civilians in Rafah and that a "better-planned operation" could be conducted in the region.

Miller responded to a question regarding whether the Israeli delegation, which canceled its trip to Washington following the UNSC Gaza resolution, would come to the US in the coming days by saying, "There is no such planning on our calendar at the moment."
