Following the early general election held in Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic announced that the "Aleksandar Vucic-United Serbia" list, which he leads, has lost the election.
Vucic, who resigned from the presidency on September 27 and entered the election as the prime ministerial candidate for the list led by the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), spoke at the SNS building in Belgrade after voting concluded.
Stating that official results have not yet been announced, Vucic said, "According to the verified data we have, we have lost this election. The Student List won. They will have more deputies in parliament than we do."
In his statement, Vucic added, "I wanted to come out and say this early so you wouldn't have to wait too long. We will do what is expected of us as the opposition. The struggle continues."
More than 6.4 million registered voters in the country went to the polls to determine the new members of the 250-seat National Assembly of Serbia. The Republic Electoral Commission of Serbia (RIK) announced the turnout rate as 67.6 percent as of 19:00 local time.
In Serbia, widespread protests against the government had begun following the collapse of a canopy at a train station in the city of Novi Sad in 2024, which resulted in the deaths of 16 people. In statements made before the election, Vucic had accused foreign organizations of financing the protests and promised to keep his country out of a potential Europe-Russia conflict.
