BYD's low-cost electric vehicle move
Chinese manufacturer BYD is preparing its Racco model for the 'kei' car class in Japan. The electric mini vehicle is expected to be priced under 2 million yen after incentives.
Chinese electric vehicle manufacturer BYD is preparing to enter the Japanese market's "kei" car segment, where domestic brands are strong, with its new Racco model. The boxy, small electric vehicle, developed for narrow roads and limited parking spaces, is expected to be priced under 2 million yen—approximately 578 thousand TL—after incentives.
According to information released by BYD, the Racco will offer a range of 210 to 320 kilometers on a full charge. This figure positions it above the range of the Nissan Sakura, one of the most preferred electric kei models in Japan.
The company's move in Japan coincides with a period in which BYD Founder and CEO Wang Chuanfu has more visibly expressed his global growth targets. Wang had announced that with advancements in charging technologies and the increase in overseas sales, BYD aims to surpass Toyota within 5 years to become the world's largest automaker.
The slowdown in growth and intensifying competition in the Chinese market are driving BYD to expand its overseas operations. The company is increasing its capacity with new production investments in Hungary, Brazil, Thailand, Indonesia, and Uzbekistan, in addition to 8 special transport ships built for electric vehicle exports.
TOUGH COMPETITION IN THE JAPANESE MARKET
Kei cars hold a significant market share in Japan due to tax and insurance advantages. According to data from the Japan Light Motor Vehicle and Motorcycle Association, vehicles in this class accounted for 36.5 percent of new vehicle sales in the country last year.
Dimensions, engine displacement, and power output limits are the determining factors in the preference for these vehicles. Cars in the kei class must not exceed certain dimensions, must have an engine displacement of under 660 cubic centimeters, and a power output of under 47 kilowatts.
BYD Japan President Atsuki Tofukuji stated in an assessment last year that they see an opportunity for low-cost, small electric vehicles due to high taxes increasing fuel prices and the closure of gas stations in rural areas with declining populations.
However, BYD is not expected to find an easy competitive environment in Japan with the Racco. In a country where the share of foreign brands in total sales is low, BYD sold 3,742 vehicles last year. While this number represents a 68 percent increase compared to 2024, it corresponds to a very small portion of the 4.5 million total new vehicle sales in Japan.
International interest in kei cars is also growing. Former US President Donald Trump, in his statement at the White House regarding fuel economy rules last year, called for these vehicles, which he described as "very small" and "really cute," to be produced in the US.
