Manual cars have become a thing of the past
According to ODMD's August data, automatic transmission cars accounted for nearly all sales; the share of manual transmissions remained at 3 percent.
In the automotive market, the preference for gear types has shifted significantly toward automatic transmissions. According to data from the Automotive Distributors and Mobility Association (ODMD) for August, automatic transmission cars accounted for 97 percent of total sales. The share of manual transmission cars has fallen to 3 percent.
The data reveals that this transformation in the market has been ongoing for a long time. While the share of automatic transmissions in car sales was at the 57 percent level approximately 10 years ago, this rate reached 97 percent in the most recently announced August data.
MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS ARE ALMOST NON-EXISTENT IN UPPER SEGMENTS
When viewed on a segment basis, it was observed that automatic transmissions accounted for nearly all sales in many classes. All cars sold in the A, D, and E segments consisted of automatic transmission models. The automatic transmission rate was recorded at 97.9 percent in the B segment, 95.6 percent in the C segment, and 99.8 percent in the F segment.
| Segment | Automatic transmission rate |
|---|---|
| A | 100% |
| B | 97.9% |
| C | 95.6% |
| D | 100% |
| E | 100% |
| F | 99.8% |
In addition to technological developments, ease of use is also effective in the increasing trend toward automatic transmission vehicles. In particular, the lack of a need to use a clutch in heavy traffic increases the interest of drivers in models with automatic transmissions.
In the past, issues such as the probability of failure in automatic transmission vehicles, maintenance costs, and the availability of skilled mechanics could influence consumer preferences. However, the development of transmission technology and increased durability in new-generation cars have contributed to the reduction of these concerns.
The August table showed that manual transmissions are increasingly confined to a shrinking space, especially in new car sales. The fact that 97 out of every 100 car sales consist of automatic transmission models indicates that preferences in the market have now changed significantly.
