According to DİSK, the number of unemployed has reached 12 million

The DİSK Research Center (DİSK-AR) shared a report containing narrow and broad-defined unemployment rates following the release of labor force statistics. In the DİSK report, it was stated, "Broad-defined unemployment is at its peak, at 29.2 percent and 11 million 810 thousand." DİSK-AR noted that the number of broad-defined unemployed individuals has increased by 2.7 million in the last year and by 1.7 million in the last month. 

The following statements were included in DİSK-AR's report:

"According to the calculation made by DİSK-AR using TURKSTAT data, the seasonally adjusted number of broad-defined unemployed individuals was 11 million 810 thousand in June 2024. According to TURKSTAT, narrow-defined unemployment, which was 13.7 percent in June 2019 before the pandemic, was 9.2 percent in June 2024. However, in the same period, the broad-defined unemployment rate rose from 19.1 percent to 29.2 percent. In the last year, the number of broad-defined unemployed increased by 2 million 668 thousand, rising from 9.1 million to 11.8 million. Since the Covid-19 pandemic, the broad-defined unemployment rate has increased by 10 points, and the number of broad-defined unemployed has increased by 5 million 205 thousand people."

BROAD-DEFINED FEMALE UNEMPLOYMENT ROSE TO 37 PERCENT

DİSK-AR's report emphasized that female unemployment is higher than male unemployment. In the TURKSTAT report, the seasonally adjusted narrow-defined unemployment rate in June 2024 was 7.6 percent for men, while it was 12.4 percent for women.

APPROXIMATELY 88 PERCENT OF OFFICIAL UNEMPLOYED CANNOT RECEIVE UNEMPLOYMENT BENEFITS

The report stated that the vast majority of the unemployed cannot benefit from aid due to the strict conditions for receiving unemployment benefits. DİSK-AR explained as follows:

"In June 2024, TURKSTAT announced the total number of narrow-defined unemployed as 3 million 305 thousand people. According to İŞKUR's June 2024 Unemployment Insurance Bulletins data, the number of those who could receive unemployment benefits that month is around 377 thousand. Thus, in June 2024, only 11.4 percent of the official unemployed were able to receive unemployment benefits. Approximately 3 million unemployed were left without unemployment benefits. This means that 88.6 percent of the unemployed could not receive unemployment benefits."

THE GAP BETWEEN BROAD AND NARROW-DEFINED UNEMPLOYMENT IS 20 POINTS

DİSK-AR's report mentioned that the gap between the broad and narrow-defined unemployment rates is widening. The report stated, "The most important reason for the gap between narrow and broad unemployment widening to this extent is the increase in the number of time-related underemployed, those who have lost hope, those who are not looking for work but are ready to work, and those who are looking for work but cannot start. Thus, while narrow-defined unemployment remains limited, the gap between it and broad-defined unemployment is widening," it was determined.
