Aftershock warning from Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan!

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake occurred in Balıkesir. Following the earthquake, it was reported that 10 buildings had collapsed. It is not yet known whether there has been any loss of life in the earthquake.

Speaking to Yeniçağ, earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Övgün Ahmet Ercan made statements regarding the earthquake that occurred in Balıkesir.

"THIS EARTHQUAKE SHOULD NOT HAVE CAUSED DESTRUCTION"

Stating that the last earthquake of this magnitude, 6.1, occurred in this region in 1969, Ercan said, "We were expecting such an earthquake in Sındırgı. Larger earthquakes have occurred in this region in the past. That earthquake happened today. This earthquake should not have caused destruction. However, because the statics of the structures were tampered with, collapses occurred in this earthquake, especially in buildings constructed before 2007. The collapsed buildings are structures that do not meet earthquake regulations."

"NO ONE SHOULD ENTER THEIR HOME THIS EVENING"

Stating that aftershocks could occur following the 6.1 magnitude earthquake, Ercan said, "There will be 5.1 magnitude earthquakes in the region after this one. Therefore, no one should enter their home this evening."

Pointing out that the minimum wage and pension must increase for earthquakes to cease being a problem, Ercan remarked, "For earthquakes not to be a problem, the minimum wage should not be less than 75 thousand TL. Therefore, it is not possible for citizens to take precautions against earthquakes in a country where the pension is 14 thousand TL and the minimum wage is 22 thousand TL. The public is in the midst of a cost-of-living crisis. They are not in a position to live in sturdy houses in safe locations. If we want to reduce deaths and destruction in earthquakes, we must first increase production resources, improve the country's income and economy, and increase the national income per capita. Otherwise, we are only fooling ourselves. The earthquake problem will not be solved until the economy improves."

Speaking about whether a major earthquake will occur in Istanbul, Ercan said, "I do not expect an earthquake in Istanbul until 2065."
