Former AKP MP Şamil Tayyar shared a striking account regarding a former Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EPDK) employee he said he encountered in Tarsus in a post on his social media account.
According to Tayyar, the person, who is stated to be an engineer, turned reports regarding fuel smuggling into a "source of income." Tayyar described the person in question as a "professional informant" and a "bounty hunter."
In the post, it was claimed that this person has made 21 reports to date, 8 of which have been concluded, and that they have earned approximately $2 million in rewards. Tayyar also wrote that the person knows the relevant prosecutors, KOM police officers, and customs inspectors because they work closely together.
“The man is a professional informant, a kind of bounty hunter. An engineer who worked at EPDK for years and then left, reporting fuel smugglers has become his source of income.”
In the same post, Tayyar also relayed that the person he referred to as an "informant" said that fuel smuggling has decreased in recent years. In the conversation relayed by Tayyar, the person stated that "there hasn't been much smuggling for 4/5 years" due to rising costs and the narrowing of the tax gap.
