The Ambassador said it wasn't 'Canadian': It turns out it was a lie and it is listed on the stock exchange!

In the İliç district of Erzincan, the Canadian Ambassador to Ankara had stated that the company had no connection to Canada in order to prevent the Canadian SSR Mining, one of the parties responsible for the mining disaster, from taking responsibility. 

However, through a collaboration between soL and Mining Watch, the details regarding SSR Mining's corporate structure and the Canadian Ambassador's claims have emerged.

IT TURNS OUT IT IS SUBJECT TO CANADIAN LAW

Information examined by soL and Mining Watch reveals that SSR Mining is clearly a company subject to Canadian law, operating in the Canadian province of British Columbia.

According to information on the company's website, SSR Mining has an office in Toronto, Canada, and its headquarters are located in Denver, Colorado, in the USA.

The annual report prepared for the company demonstrates that SSR Mining and its subsidiaries are subject to the laws of the Canadian province of British Columbia. The company's common shares are listed on the Toronto Stock Exchange (TSX) in Canada. The company's shares are also listed under the name SSRM on the NASDAQ Global Select Market in the USA and under the name SSR on the Australian Securities Exchange (ASX).

OPERATIONS ARE CONCENTRATED IN TURKEY

Although it is commonly seen that Canadian companies operate under different administrations, this does not change the fact that the companies' legal domicile is in their own country.

It operates in regions where mineral deposits are richest.

According to the company's latest annual report, it has production centers in the USA, Turkey, Canada, and Argentina. The company is also the owner and operator of the Pitarrilla mine in Mexico and the Chala and Yauricocha mines in Peru.

It is noteworthy that the company operates in regions of the world where mineral deposits are the richest.

The company, whose operations are concentrated in Turkey and the Americas, is involved in the production of silver, lead, and zinc in addition to gold.  

THE AMBASSADOR DENIED IT

Canadian Ambassador to Ankara Kevin Hamilton had claimed that Canada was not among the partners of Anagold Mining, which operates the Çöpler Gold Mine in the İliç district of Erzincan, where the cyanide-laced landslide occurred.

In his written statement on the matter, Hamilton had noted the following:

"The mine is a joint venture between Turkish and American companies.

The American company SSR Mining is the result of a merger between a former Canadian company based in Vancouver and a US-based company called Alacer Gold. Alacer Gold holds the original ownership of the Erzincan mine. The now-defunct Canadian company never owned the mine in Erzincan. The new merged company took the name SSR Mining and established its headquarters in Denver, Colorado, in 2020.

Like many international mining companies, SSR Mining is traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange. However, this does not mean that the company is a Canadian company. SSR Mining is also traded on the NASDAQ and the Australian stock exchange."

Hamilton had also made the following post on his social media account:

"Very sad news has come from Erzincan. Our thoughts are with the trapped workers and their families. We are encouraged by the rapid response of AFAD and the rescue teams as they continue their heroic work.

We have seen that some media outlets have reported that the mine where the landslide occurred belongs to Canada. This is not true. The mining operation in Erzincan does not belong to Canada."
