Barış Terkoğlu claims 'AKP is preparing a move to take the IMM': What could they do in Turkey?

Drawing attention to the current distribution of seats in the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Council, Terkoğlu made a striking claim. Evaluating the 155 to 140 breakdown in the council, Terkoğlu said that if only 8 members were to switch sides, the balance could change completely.

Terkoğlu stated the following:

“If we look at the table again today, it is 155 to 140. If they change 8 people in this table, everything changes. To be frank; if they carry out a few new operations, this table changes. Because this table was created through operations.”

Pointing to Ekrem İmamoğlu's legal situation, Terkoğlu stated that for a new mayoral election to be on the agenda at the IMM, the current mayor's legal status would need to change.

“What is needed for this? Probably a political atmosphere will be awaited. Secondly, legal preparations will be made. Since the current mayor is still Ekrem İmamoğlu, he would need to be banned from politics, meaning a conviction in a case where he received a political ban would need to be finalized.”

Terkoğlu also pointed to the file known in the public eye as the “fool case”:

“If you ask which case that is; for example, the ‘fool case’ is currently the most imminent danger for Ekrem İmamoğlu. Immediately after an approval decision is issued in that file, an election will be held just like in Üsküdar.”

“JUST LIKE IN ÜSKÜDAR...”

Terkoğlu said that in the event of a possible IMM mayoral election, the balances in the municipal council would become much more critical.

Recalling the developments in Üsküdar, Terkoğlu argued that the council arithmetic could be changed through political mobility that could occur in a short time.

“And in that election, perhaps, just as we saw in Üsküdar, this table will be interfered with through operations and seat changes within a week.”

This has effectively ceased to be just mathematics. It has become a matter of democracy, law, and the right to be elected.

If they do this in Istanbul, what might they do in Turkey? That is the real issue.

The existence of a ballot box no longer means that an election is being held.”
