CHP's Faik Öztrak reveals: The detention of İmamoğlu cost Turkey 684 billion TL! 'With this money, every retiree could have been given a 41 thousand lira bonus'

The detention of Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu on allegations of 'terrorism' and 'corruption' stirred the markets. While the stock market experienced sharp declines, gold and foreign exchange rates raced to record highs.

CHP Tekirdağ Deputy Faik Öztrak drew attention to the loss of value in the Turkish Lira during his speech at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM).

Stating that "the bill for an unlawful step has once again fallen on the citizens," Öztrak expressed that the increase in the exchange rate alone has burdened Turkey's external debt with 684 billion lira.

Speaking at the TBMM General Assembly, Öztrak highlighted the economic losses experienced due to the lira's depreciation. 

"With this money, every retiree could have been given a 41 thousand lira bonus," said Faik Öztrak, noting that the currency shock caused by the palace has also hit companies with foreign exchange deficits through the 'high interest, controlled exchange rate' policy. He stated that the total loss of these companies has reached 185 billion lira.
