CHP's Kaya reacts to 'kunefe' incident: A baby burning to death on one side, opulence on the other
Asu Kaya, Chair of the CHP Women's Branch, has strongly criticized images of the Hatay Governor and the Metropolitan Mayor feeding each other kunefe at the 'Hatay Promotion Days' on the same day that one-year-old Mehmet Can Saraç lost his life in a fire at a container home belonging to an earthquake-survivor family in Hatay's Yayladağı district.
Kaya reacted to the images of the Governor and the Mayor eating kunefe at the "Hatay Promotion Days" on the same day a 1-year-old baby lost his life in a fire at an earthquake-survivor family's container home.
Kaya stated, "On one side a kunefe ceremony, on the other a baby burning to death. On one side opulence, on the other despair."
Asu Kaya used the following expressions in her written statement:
"THE GOVERNOR AND THE MAYOR ARE POSING WITH KUNEFE SHOWS"
"In the Yayladağı district of Hatay, 1-year-old Mehmet Can Saraç lost his life in a fire that broke out in the container of an earthquake-survivor family. The death of this tiny child, who survived the rubble only to struggle for life in a container, is the most painful indicator that children, earthquake survivors, and the poor have been abandoned to their fate in this country.
Almost three years have passed since the earthquake. But Hatay is still under the rubble, citizens are still in containers, and children are still face-to-face with death.
If the state still condemns its citizens to containers in the third year of the earthquake and cannot provide a safe life, then the state no longer exists there.
A baby burns to death due to cold, poverty, and negligence; at the same hours, the Hatay Governor and the Hatay Metropolitan Mayor are posing with kunefe shows.

"HAS THIS COUNTRY BECOME THIS HEARTLESS?"
Has this country become this heartless? On one side a kunefe ceremony, on the other a baby burning to death. On one side opulence, on the other despair. We will never forgive this heartlessness.
Little Mehmet Can's death is not fate or misfortune. It is the result of negligence, insensitivity, and the absence of the state.
This is a political responsibility. We will bring the issue to the Parliament's agenda. We will follow it to the end to ensure that everyone who is negligent is held accountable.
We will not remain silent until this order changes and this decay ends. The right to life is sacred. The duty of the state is to ensure life!"
