Critical warning from Osman Bektaş after the earthquake in Adana: 'The danger is not over'

The earthquake that occurred in the Saimbeyli district of Adana has brought discussions regarding fault lines in the region back to the agenda. According to data from the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the tremor was recorded at 04:02 at a depth of 7 kilometers. The magnitude of the earthquake was announced as 5.0.

Evaluating the earthquake, geoscientist Prof. Dr. Osman Bektaş drew attention specifically to the Savrun Fault. Bektaş stated that seismic activity around Saimbeyli has been ongoing since 2023 and emphasized that definitive judgments about the region should be avoided.

WHY IS THE SAVRUN FAULT ON THE AGENDA?

According to Bektaş, the major faults to the east and north of the Kahramanmaraş block ruptured during the 2023 Kahramanmaraş-centered earthquakes; however, the Savrun Fault, located on the western border, remained unbroken. For this reason, the current stress state of the fault and the extent to which it is locked remain uncertain.

In an assessment shared on his social media account, Bektaş used the phrase "The danger is not over," stating that it would not be correct to become complacent in the region. However, he also emphasized that a definitive earthquake prediction for Adana cannot be made with current scientific data.

In 2023, the major faults to the east and north of the Kahramanmaraş block ruptured.

The Savrun Fault on the western border remained unbroken and has still been moving since 2023 with the earthquakes around Saimbeyli.

It is unknown how locked the Savrun is.

For this reason, the earthquake danger for Adana is not over.

Without knowing the mechanical properties of the fault (how locked it is, whether it is producing earthquakes, how much energy it is expending through creep), it is not correct to say for Adana that 'a big earthquake will happen' or that 'the danger has passed.'
