The internal migration movement that has been ongoing in Turkey for many years has significantly affected the population distribution of the provinces. Millions of people who left their hometowns to find work, receive an education, or reach better living conditions are living in different cities today. So, how would Turkey's population distribution change if everyone lived in the city where they are registered?
The list, prepared by taking into account the data from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) on the provinces where people are registered, revealed striking differences in the population rankings of the cities. While some metropolitan cities that stand out with their current populations fell behind, it was observed that many provinces, especially in Anatolia, rose to the top of the rankings.
In the ranking created with the assumption that everyone lives in their hometown, Şanlıurfa took the first place, Konya the second, and Istanbul the third. So, what rank is your hometown in this list? Here are the populations of the 81 provinces calculated according to the city of registration:
