Cyber Security Presidency to be established in Turkey following Israel's attack on Hezbollah

Israel's detonation of old-style small pagers used by Hezbollah members for secret communication has brought the issue of cyber security back to the global agenda, and significant steps are being taken in this field in Turkey as well.

Hürriyet columnist Hande Fırat addressed the efforts to establish a Cyber Security Presidency in her column.

Hande Fırat stated that "the aim is to establish a Cyber Security Presidency with a regulation expected to be brought to the agenda as soon as the Grand National Assembly of Turkey opens," noting that this issue has been discussed for months and that concrete steps will now be taken.

A STRUCTURE AFFILIATED WITH THE PRESIDENCY

In her article, Fırat noted that the Cyber Security Presidency to be established will be a structure similar to the National Intelligence Organization (MİT) and is planned to operate under the Presidency.

Emphasizing that this new restructuring will bring a common cyber security standard to all units of the state, Fırat said that all electronic systems will be placed under stricter protection using domestic and national technology.

According to Fırat's statement, the Cyber Security Presidency will ensure the security of every unit of the state, from the Ministry of Defense to population registration processes, and from the Ministry of Health to e-government applications. Thus, Turkey aims to create a more comprehensive protection system against cyber threats.

A NEW ERA BEGINS

It is stated that these steps taken in the field of cyber security will protect Turkey's digital assets more securely and that the country will be better prepared against cyber threats in the coming period.

WHAT HAPPENED?

Despite US warnings to Israel not to escalate attacks, Lebanon witnessed an unprecedented operation on September 17. Israel simultaneously detonated thousands of old-style small pagers used by Hezbollah members for secret communication. 12 people, including two children, lost their lives and 2,323 people were injured in the explosions.

Experts state that this was an "unprecedented" attack carried out by sabotaging the devices before they were delivered.

It is believed that a small amount of explosive material may have been placed inside each device before they were even delivered. While the effects of the September 17 attack were still ongoing, handheld radios were detonated just one day later, on September 18. It is stated that the radios were purchased at the same time as the pagers detonated in the first attack. Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant said that a "new phase" in the war had begun.

As a result of the detonation of numerous radios in the country on September 18, 25 people died and more than 608 people were injured.
