Earthquake warning from Naci Görür: 'It is accumulating energy'
Earthquake expert Prof. Dr. Naci Görür has issued an earthquake warning. Görür stated, "Adıyaman has not yet faced a major earthquake caused by the movement of its own fault line. The Zagros belt, in particular, is accumulating energy through slow movement. It is unknown when it will activate, but preparations must be made now."
Speaking at the "Earthquake-Resilient Adıyaman" conference held at the Adıyaman Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Istanbul Technical University faculty member and geologist Prof. Dr. Naci Görür made striking remarks.
According to a report by Medyascope, Prof. Dr. Görür stated that the East Anatolian Fault, the Dead Sea Fault, and the Bitlis Thrust Belt are the primary fault lines threatening Adıyaman.
Noting that these fault lines have the potential to produce major earthquakes depending on their recurrence periods, Görür added that it is necessary to make Adıyaman earthquake-resilient.
Emphasizing that local governments, the central administration, and the public must work hand in hand, Görür said, "It is possible to make Adıyaman a completely earthquake-resilient city within 10-15 years."
Prof. Dr. Görür stressed that earthquake resilience is not limited to the building stock alone, but is a holistic effort that encompasses the city's infrastructure, economy, ecosystem, and public awareness.
"ADIYAMAN HAS NOT YET FACED A MAJOR EARTHQUAKE"
Stating that the destruction experienced by Adıyaman was the result of the movement of neighboring fault lines, Görür said, "Adıyaman has not yet faced a major earthquake caused by the movement of its own fault line. The Zagros belt, in particular, is accumulating energy through slow movement. It is unknown when it will activate, but preparations must be made now."
