Explosive behind-the-scenes report on İmamoğlu's 'Ahmak' trial: 'Sentence to be announced soon'
It has been claimed that the sentence for Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who faces a potential political ban for allegedly calling YSK members 'fools' (ahmak), will be announced very soon. Journalist Altan Sancar stated, "A decision on İmamoğlu's sentence will emerge from the appellate court in the very near future and will be sent to the Court of Cassation. The echoes of this are now being heard everywhere in Ankara, from both the judiciary and the political sphere."
The lawyer for Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu, who faces a potential "political ban" for allegedly calling members of the Supreme Election Council (YSK) "fools" (ahmak), filed a new application on September 3 to the 24th Criminal Chamber of the Istanbul Regional Court of Justice, which is reviewing the appeal.
Lawyer Mehmet Pehlivan also included a 49-page legal opinion from criminal law professor Adem Sözüer and associate professor of constitutional law Tolga Şirin in the application.
Pehlivan requested that the trial be stayed and the file be sent to the Constitutional Court for a concrete norm review regarding the article of the Turkish Penal Code that led to İmamoğlu's sentencing to 2 years, 7 months, and 15 days in prison, citing its unconstitutionality.
CLAIM THAT 'SENTENCE WILL BE ANNOUNCED SOON'
While the case against İmamoğlu continues, journalist Altan Sancar shared information he obtained regarding the matter.
Speaking on Sözcü TV, Sancar said the following:
"Preparations are underway. A decision on İBB Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu's sentence will emerge from the appellate court in the very near future and will be sent to the Court of Cassation. The echoes of this are now being heard everywhere in Ankara, from both the judiciary and the political sphere. Who will be the İBB Mayor after Ekrem İmamoğlu?
This time, it will be thrown at the opposition public as a smoke screen; or we are heading in a completely different direction. There was a debate over whether Erdoğan would appoint a successor or not. As for me, I do not really expect him to point to a 'successor' (I say this in quotation marks), meaning a name to come after him."
