Following the attack on CHP Chairman Özgür Özel in recent days, striking details about the incident continue to emerge. According to the statement made by Özgür Özel at his party's group meeting, the attacker, Selçuk Tengioğlu, went to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) in January and reported an assassination plan against Ekrem İmamoğlu.

Özgür Özel used the following expressions regarding Tengioğlu, who carried out the attack, in his group speech:

“In January of this year, this baby killer, child killer attacker from yesterday comes to the IMM. He says, ‘The friends I stayed with in the ward received instructions; an assassination will be carried out against Ekrem İmamoğlu.’ IMM officials immediately call the police and hand him over to two police officers. But then, who knows what happens.”

Özel also asked these striking questions regarding the attacker's past:

“Look at what kind of ward he stayed in? Who are those friends? Where are the people he is in contact with now? If this man attacked the leader of the main opposition yesterday, is this a coincidence? This man is being used by someone.”

HE WENT TO THE IMM THREE TIMES, ASKED FOR HELP TWICE

According to information shared by Nefes writer Aytunç Erkin, Selçuk Tengioğlu went to the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality building three times at the beginning of 2025. During his first two visits, he requested financial aid. However, he was not allowed into the building after it was determined that he had a criminal record.

His third visit took place on January 13, 2025. This time, Tengioğlu, who was not allowed into the municipal building, met with White Desk officials outside. During this meeting, he claimed that he had just been released from prison and that while he was in the ward, some individuals were preparing an assassination against IMM Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu.

Following these statements, IMM officials took the situation seriously, notified police teams, and Tengioğlu was handed over to the police. However, no information has been released to the public regarding whether any action was taken on the matter after this handover or how the process proceeded.

It is known that Selçuk Tengioğlu was previously sentenced to prison for the crime of killing two children and remained in prison for a long time. Following his attack on Özgür Özel, an arrest warrant was issued against him for the crime of “intentional injury of a public official due to their duty.”

The CHP front suggests that the incident is not just an “individual attack” and that there may be an organized structure behind it. In this context, Özgür Özel made an open call to prosecutors, saying, “Look into that ward, find out who those friends are, and investigate where the relationships lead.”
