Istanbul covered in election posters: 'Instead of pouring money into banners, they should at least feed the retirees'
With very little time left until the local elections, Istanbul has been covered in election posters. Citizens are complaining about seeing posters and banners of parties, candidates, and President Erdoğan everywhere they turn. While parties argue that they do this to influence voting preferences and demonstrate their strength, Istanbulites are expressing through various complaints that their decisions remain unchanged.
The local election wind is making its effect felt all over Istanbul, and Istanbulites are quite unhappy with the environmental pollution and waste caused by the banners hung for candidate promotion and displays of power.
HalkTV extended microphones to citizens in Şişli Kurtuluş, one of the districts where this pollution is most intense.
IT HAS NO EFFECT
Voters are most troubled by the election posters hung on buildings, the paint of which fades over time. Istanbulites also state that the hung banners have no effect on their voting preferences.
"DRIVERS ARE HAVING A HARD TIME"
In the mega-city where traffic is already at an impasse, drivers occasionally have a hard time due to banners that tear and fall to the ground. In fact, tram services on the Haliç line were even disrupted because of Murat Kurum's posters.
"THEY SHOULD FEED THE RETIREES"
In addition to environmental pollution, voters are also revolting against the money spent on banners and posters. Expressing their reactions, Istanbulites say, "People are hungry. They are afraid to pass by the market, the butcher, or the greengrocer. Tens of thousands of families are struggling to survive. Instead of pouring money into banners, they should at least feed the retirees."
