May Day preparations begin in Taksim: Iron barriers brought in
Security measures have begun in and around Taksim Square ahead of May 1st, Labor and Solidarity Day. Police barriers have been brought to Taksim Square, which is closed to celebrations.
Due to the approaching May 1st, security barriers have begun to be placed in and around Taksim Square.
The area around the Taksim Republic Monument has been cordoned off with barriers. Some of the barriers are being kept ready on standby.
On the morning of May 1st, Taksim Square and the roads leading to the square will be closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic.
Minister of Interior Ali Yerlikaya had announced the measures to be taken in Istanbul for May 1st, Labor and Solidarity Day, stating, "Taksim Square is not among the locations and routes determined and announced within the scope of the Law on Meetings and Demonstrations.
Furthermore; a specific number of representatives from the confederations and affiliated unions that have applied to the Istanbul Governorship will be able to lay wreaths at the Taksim Monument, make press statements, leave carnations at Kazancı Yokuşu, and hold a moment of silence."
