New development following 14 arrests in İzmir electrocution tragedy

Following the arrest of 14 people in the investigation into the deaths of 2 people who were electrocuted during heavy rain in İzmir's Konak district, 3 more individuals have been released under judicial control.

New development following 14 arrests in İzmir electrocution tragedy

In the Alsancak neighborhood of İzmir's Konak district, heavy rainfall that hit the city on Friday, July 12, turned streets and avenues into lakes, during which Özge Ceren Deniz (23) and İnanç Öktemay (44) were caught in the rain.

Özge Ceren Deniz, a 5th-year student at İzmir Democracy University Faculty of Medicine, and her friend İnanç Öktemay, who wanted to cross the street through the puddle, lost their lives after being electrocuted in the water. 

The number of people for whom detention warrants were issued in the investigation launched into the incident had risen to 35. While 33 of the suspects were taken into custody by teams from the Public Security Branch Office's Murder Bureau, 6 of the captured individuals were released upon the prosecutor's instruction after giving their statements. It was learned that efforts to capture the remaining 2 suspects were ongoing.

Within the scope of the ongoing investigation, detention warrants were issued for 5 more people. It was learned that 1 of the suspects was abroad and another was undergoing cancer treatment; 3 of the suspects for whom detention warrants were issued were captured. The captured suspects were released under judicial control by the court to which they were referred.
