Political corridors were buzzing: The behind-the-scenes of the Erdoğan-Nebati meeting revealed

AKP Chairman and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's meeting with former Minister of Treasury and Finance Nureddin Nebati at the Dolmabahçe Office last week stirred up political corridors.

The surprise meeting brought the question "Is Nebati returning to the ministry?" to the agenda.

According to the report by Veli Toprak from Sözcü, it was Nebati who requested the meeting. During the meeting, Erdoğan brought up complaints from Mersin and warned Nebati, who is a Member of Parliament for Mersin, saying, “You are neglecting your electoral district, go more often.”

Mersin stands out as one of the provinces where the AKP has struggled for a long time. In the 2023 general elections, the AKP could only garner 24 percent of the vote in the city, while President Erdoğan placed second in the presidential election with 37 percent of the vote. In the 2024 local elections, despite the AKP supporting the MHP candidate, it lost both the Metropolitan Municipality and the districts. In the March 2024 elections, the AKP failed to achieve success in any of Mersin's 13 districts.
