Prison where riot occurred 12 years ago in Şanlıurfa is being demolished: It will become a Public Garden

The Şanlıurfa E-Type Closed and Open Penal Institution was closed following a riot 12 years ago, in which 13 inmates lost their lives, and the flood disaster that occurred last year. It was announced that the prison would be demolished and replaced by a "Public Garden" for public use.

PRISON CLOSED AFTER FLOOD DISASTER

Built in 1968 with a capacity of 400 in the Eyyübiye district of Şanlıurfa, the Şanlıurfa E-Type Closed and Open Penal Institutionwas closed following the flood disaster that occurred last year. The inmates in the prison were transferred to other prisons in neighboring provinces. It has been announced that preparations have begun for the demolition of the prison, which was evacuated after the flood.

13 INMATES HAD LOST THEIR LIVES

A riot that broke out in the prison on June 16, 2012, resulted in a fire, and 13 inmates lost their lives in the incident. Following this tragic event, the prison's capacity and security were frequently brought to the agenda. 

A PUBLIC GARDEN INSTEAD OF A PRISON

Eyyübiye Mayor Mehmet Kuşannounced that a large "Public Garden" would be built on an area of approximately 100 decares following the demolition of the prison. Mayor Kuş stated, "This area will include a youth center, educational areas, children's playgrounds, recreational areas, and green spaces. The doors of the prison will now be opened to the public."

DEMOLITION WORKS ARE BEGINNING 

While it was stated that the demolition process would begin shortly, it was emphasized that the Public Garden to be built in place of the prison would be an important social space for both the people of Eyyübiye and Şanlıurfa.
