Rescue operation begins for ship that ran aground in the Dardanelles, strait closed to traffic
A rescue operation has begun for the 'NOTA APP', a bulk carrier that ran aground after experiencing engine failure while passing through the Dardanelles. The Dardanelles has been closed to traffic in both directions.
The 189-meter-long, Panama-flagged bulk carrier 'NOTA APP', carrying 51 thousand 258 tons of grain from Russia to Egypt, experienced engine failure off the coast of Kilitbahir village in the Eceabat district of Çanakkale.
The ship's captain reported the situation via radio to the Dardanelles Vessel Traffic Services Center. After the engine failure, the ship began to drift and eventually ran aground.
The 'KURTARMA-21' tugboat and the 'KEGM-8' boat belonging to the General Directorate of Coastal Safety were dispatched to the area.
Rescue operations will begin on the ship following a dive by divers. Other ships passing through the strait have also been informed about the breakdown.
