Restriction decision for free public transport for those over 65: 'Only 4 days'
Ercan Soydaş, President of the All Private Public Bus Association (TÖHOB), announced that all private public buses across Turkey will only carry passengers for free between the 1st and 4th of every month.
Members of the All Private Public Bus Association (TÖHOB) gathered at the Ankara Chamber of Commerce (ATO) to make a decision regarding 18 different groups entitled to free transport, including citizens over the age of 65.
Following rising fuel costs, the free use of public transport by citizens over 65 has sparked debate.
Expressing that they find the support provided by the Ministry of Family and Social Services to private public buses insufficient, bus drivers claimed that said support only covers their costs for 2 days. In his speech there, TÖHOB President Ercan Soydaş stated that they had made sacrifices until now but had reached their limit.
''THEY WILL NOT BE CARRIED FOR THE REMAINING 26 DAYS''
Stating that a decision was made to carry citizens over 65 for free for only 4 days of each month, Soydaş noted the following:
- Let us make a 2-day sacrifice to match the 2-day transport support provided by the Ministry. Let us carry our passengers in the 18 different groups who have the right to free travel, excluding the four groups we previously announced, between the 1st and 4th of every month.
- I also request from the remaining part: Please use public vehicles. All private buses across Turkey will only carry passengers for free between the 1st and 4th of the month. They will not carry them for the remaining 26 days.
It was stated that families of martyrs, families of veterans, police personnel, and members of the press will be able to continue benefiting from free transport at all times.
