Struck by two vehicles while fleeing stray dogs! University student loses her life

A university student has lost her life after being struck by a car while fleeing from stray dogs in Şanlıurfa.

According to the information received, Sevda Özkaya (27), a senior student in the Department of Mathematics at the Harran University Faculty of Science and Letters, was attacked by stray dogs near the Gülveren neighborhood yesterday evening.

While attempting to flee to the other side of the Şanlıurfa-Mardin highway, Özkaya was struck by a car with the license plate 06 BR 6210, driven by K.A.

Upon notification, health and police teams were dispatched to the scene.

Özkaya, who was seriously injured in the accident, could not be saved despite medical intervention at the hospital to which she was taken. The driver has been detained.

Following procedures at the Forensic Medicine Institute, Özkaya's body was handed over to her family.

FAMILY DEMANDS REMOVAL OF STRAY DOGS

Mother Emine Özkaya told reporters at the scene that her heart was burning.

Stating that her daughter wanted to be a teacher, Özkaya said the following:

"My heart is burning. My daughter had only one exam left; she had come for that one exam. This is not the first or second time regarding stray dogs. You see it in the news. I beg you, let no other mothers suffer. I want the stray dogs to be collected. Are these cities ownerless? Why is it like this? There are many dogs at universities. Why do they leave them at universities and in empty fields? Last year, they attacked my other daughter in Afyon. That fear alone was enough for her."

Father Cemil Özkaya emphasized that some people end up under vehicles or get injured because of stray dogs, and expressed that the stray dogs should be collected.

Özkaya's friend, Berfin Reyhan Kırmızıgül, stated that they were attacked by dogs after getting off the bus, saying, "When we got off the bus, the dogs attacked. We ran in another direction, and she ran onto the road. When she tried to come back to us, the vehicle hit her."

It was learned that Özkaya's funeral will be held in the Silopi district of Şırnak.
