Trial for attack on Özgür Özel adjourned! Attacker Selçuk Tengioğlu's defense revealed
The trial of defendant Selçuk Tengioğlu for the attack on CHP Chairman Özgür Özel has been adjourned to September 4. Tengioğlu stated that he was remorseful.
Selçuk Tengioğlu, who attacked CHP Chairman Özgür Özel as he was leaving the funeral ceremony for TBMM Deputy Speaker Sırrı Süreyya Önder at the Taksim Atatürk Cultural Center, has appeared in court for the second time. In the case heard at the Istanbul 44th Criminal Court of First Instance, it was stated that Tengioğlu is being tried for "intentional injury," facing a prison sentence ranging from 2 years and 3 months to 4.5 years.
According to the report by Cumhuriyet, Tengioğlu, who attended the hearing via SEGBİS from the prison in Çorlu, expressed his remorse in his defense.
"I am only feeling regret. The physical action I took was something that stemmed solely from stupidity," said Tengioğlu, who apologized to Özgür Özel's family. He used the expressions, "I sincerely apologize to my esteemed chairman's mother, father, and family."
The court decided to continue the defendant's detention and adjourned the hearing to September 4.
