New year regulations for credit card limits
Significant changes will be made to credit card limits as of 2026, and flexibility will be provided for cash advance transactions.
The economic administration plans to ease the credit card restrictions implemented as part of the fight against inflation in 2026. The new economic management, which took office in June 2023, had introduced a series of restrictions on credit cards to bring inflation under control. In this context, with an instruction sent by the BRSA to banks in early 2024, the maturity of installment cash advance transactions made from credit cards was reduced from 12 months to 3 months, and cardholders were allowed to withdraw cash up to a maximum of 25 percent of their total limits.
However, the depreciation of the Turkish Lira and the maintenance of existing limits have reduced the use of cash advances in card transactions. For this reason, it is planned to increase the current 3-month maturity for installment cash advance transactions from credit cards to 6 months in the new year, and subsequently to 12 months. Furthermore, due to the insufficiency of the 25 thousand TL ceiling set for cash withdrawals, a revision of this limit is on the agenda. Industry sources state that the cash ceiling to be used in card transactions is expected to be increased to 50 thousand TL, while pointing out that the 25 percent withdrawal limit could be increased for cards with lower limits.
