US lawmakers issue warning regarding Binance
In a move highlighting growing concerns from both parties, members of Congress have sent a letter to President Joe Biden and Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, demanding answers regarding Binance's potential links to terror financing.
The letter, which emerged today, points to over 134 million dollars in funds being transferred to Hamas and Palestinian Islamic Jihad via digital assets between August 2021 and June 2023.
Lawmakers are seeking clarity on several fronts. They are requesting detailed information regarding wallets identified as linked to terrorist organizations, the duration of these groups' digital fundraising campaigns, and what measures the US government has taken against these assets. The members of Congress have given the administration until November 29 to respond, or alternatively, have proposed a classified briefing if detailed answers are not immediately possible.
This investigation was launched despite Hamas halting its digital fundraising activities in April. Nevertheless, questions persist regarding the scope of its financial operations, which include exchanges such as Garantex and Buy Cash, mentioned in the congressional letter as being used for hostile transactions. Lawmakers are pushing for transparency regarding how entities like Binance might be involved and what steps are being taken to mitigate such risks in the future.
