Water outage in Yalova: Allegations of chemical substances entering Kurtköy Creek

A water outage occurred across the province of Yalova due to foam appearing on the water surface at the drinking water treatment plant. Following allegations that a chemical substance had entered Kurtköy Creek, which provides the city's drinking water, samples were taken from the water and an investigation was launched. The foam at the treatment plant was captured on a mobile phone camera.

In Yalova, employees at the Yeşil Körfez Water Union Treatment Plant noticed foaming in the water late last night, leading to the implementation of a province-wide water outage. The water in the treatment pool was drained, and cleaning operations were initiated. While the Provincial Health Directorate is continuing its examinations by taking water samples, gendarmerie teams have also opened an investigation into the possibility that a chemical substance was dumped into Kurtköy Creek. The foam in the section leading from the treatment plant to the dam was recorded with a mobile phone camera. Yalova Mayor Mehmet Gürel stated in a post on social media, “We intervened immediately in the foaming in Kurtköy Creek and are performing technical cleaning. For this reason, water outages may occur. Do not worry, there is no problem.”

MOBILE PHONES OF 3 MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES UNDER EXAMINATION

According to a statement from the Yalova Governorship, water was cut off across the province as a precautionary measure following a report from the municipality during the night regarding information that a chemical substance had been mixed into Kurtköy Creek. It was learned that the gendarmerie has seized the mobile phones of 3 previously dismissed municipal employees on suspicion of their potential involvement in the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
