New detail in the newborn gang indictment... Another baby's death was covered up: 'Because the baby was Black...'

Striking details regarding the death of a baby have emerged in the indictment prepared against the newborn gang. It was determined that gang members attempted to cover up the death of a 6-month-old Black baby transferred from another hospital, and that negligence and illegal practices occurred during this process. 

The baby passed away shortly after being admitted to the hospital. However, the gang members continued to administer the wrong medication to the baby for a long time without realizing the baby had died.

 When they realized the situation, they began to devise a series of plans to conceal the incident.

Inspectors Investigated the Situation 

The incident came to light following a complaint by the baby's family. Upon the complaint, inspections were launched at the hospital, and inspectors examined the entire process in detail. 

During this time, gang members attempted to cover up the baby's death by creating fake records and trying to alter treatment and medication information.

Phone Calls and Secret Agreements Revealed 

Phone records reflected in the indictment revealed how gang members tried to hide information regarding the baby's death. 

Nurse Hakan Doğukan Taşçı claimed in a phone conversation that one of the inspectors told him what he needed to do to cover up the process. 

Taşçı stated that the inspector pulled him aside and said, "If you do exactly what I say, I will look at this as if I have come for an inspection again. Otherwise, you will be in trouble."

INSPECTOR REPORTED THE INVESTIGATION TO THE GANG

Meanwhile, Taşçı relayed his conversation with an inspector, whom he claimed was an old acquaintance, to Şeyhmuz Çelik, who was also mentioned as being involved in the process that led to the baby's death. The allegations in this conversation are as follows:

HAKAN DOĞUKAN TAŞCI: I said, 'Professor, what are you doing?' and so on; we met when I was doing my internship in Bağcılar.

ŞEYHMUS ÇELİK: Uh-huh.

HAKAN DOĞUKAN TAŞCI: He said, 'Good,' and so on. 'Come on, let's go smoke a cigarette for five minutes.'

ŞEYHMUS ÇELİK: Uh-huh.

HAKAN DOĞUKAN TAŞCI: He pulled me aside and said, 'Quickly, do exactly what I tell you to do.'

ŞEYHMUS ÇELİK: Uh-huh.

HAKAN DOĞUKAN TAŞCI: 'If you do these,' he said, 'I will look at it as if I have come for an inspection again.'

ŞEYHMUS ÇELİK: Uh-huh.

HAKAN DOĞUKAN TAŞCI: Then he said a couple of things, and we adjusted them immediately.

ŞEYHMUS ÇELİK: Uh-huh.

HAKAN DOĞUKAN TAŞCI: He acted as if he was coming for an inspection again.

ŞEYHMUS ÇELİK: Uh-huh.

HAKAN DOĞUKAN TAŞCI: He checked again and passed us on one or two things, but...

ŞEYHMUS ÇELİK: Uh-huh.

HAKAN DOĞUKAN TAŞCI: I mean, it's a big problem, he says, 'The baby's death will cause you trouble.' He also says, 'There is something different about you; there is a secret lawsuit against you,' he says, 'from about three or four months ago...'

ŞEYHMUS ÇELİK: What lawsuit?

HAKAN DOĞUKAN TAŞCI: Professor, he said there is a lawsuit like this... He said, 'There is a lawsuit against you... The provincial health director, meaning the person with the most authority after the Minister of Health, has set his sights on you,' he says.

ŞEYHMUS ÇELİK: Huh.

HAKAN DOĞUKAN TAŞCI: 'Be aware, there is a lawsuit, a secret lawsuit against you all,' he says. 'You are all involved in this as if it were an organization,' he says. 'That's why,' he said, 'quit your job immediately and save yourself.'

ŞEYHMUS ÇELİK: Quit the job, huh?

HAKAN DOĞUKAN TAŞCI: Yes, he said, 'Don't wait at all, come directly tomorrow morning and hand in your resignation. Don't stay, you'll get into trouble,' he said. I said, 'Okay, professor.'

ŞEYHMUS ÇELİK: Huh, well, I was already thinking about it at the beginning of the month, I'm thinking about it.

HAKAN DOĞUKAN TAŞCI: No, I won't wait for the beginning of the month, professor. I told Fırat professor too, I'm not staying.

ŞEYHMUS ÇELİK: Nothing will happen, what does he say, what does he say...

"They Didn't Notice the Bruising Because the Baby Was Black" 

There were striking details in the conversations between the gang members. Nurses and doctors claimed they could not notice the signs of bruising because the baby was Black. 

Nurse Hakan Doğukan Taşçı's words, "They didn't realize the child was dead because the child was Black; I came and looked, the child was dead," revealed the extent of the negligence and the cold-blooded nature of the statements.

Indictment Accepted

First Hearing on November 18. The Bakırköy 22nd High Criminal Court reviewed the 1,399-page indictment prepared by the Bakırköy Chief Public Prosecutor's Office and decided to accept the case. 

It was announced that the first hearing of the case will be held on November 18.

Crimes of the Gang and Requested Sentences in the Indictment 

The 10 deceased babies were listed as "victims," 5 people as "complainants," the SGK İstanbul Provincial Directorate as "party harmed by the crime," and health companies and hospitals as "financially liable."

A total of 47 people are listed as defendants in the indictment. It is requested that Fırat Sarı and İlker Gönen, who are among the defendants, be sentenced to 177 years and 6 months to 582 years and 9 months in prison for the crimes of "causing death by negligent conduct" (10 counts), "qualified fraud," "establishing an organization for the purpose of committing a crime," and "forgery of official documents."

For defendant Gıyasettin Mert Özdemir, a prison sentence of 180 years to 589 years and 9 months is requested for the crimes of "causing death by negligent conduct," "unlawful acquisition of personal data," "fraud to the detriment of public institutions," "establishing an organization for the purpose of committing a crime," and "forgery of official documents."

Request for Security Measures Against Hospitals 

The indictment states that the hospitals and health companies mentioned as "financially liable" during the process in which the crimes were committed obtained financial gain through fraud. 

For this reason, it was requested that security measures be applied to the legal entities, that the hospitals be closed, and that their assets be seized.

The case to be heard in Bakırköy shows that a serious struggle against illegal structures in the health sector has begun.
